Penfolds Grange 2011

Penfolds Grange 2011

"A well-executed Grange in what must have been a stressful vintage, this has some good richness and concentration, the oak sits cedary but fruit is up to the task, dark berries in all shapes and sizes here, cola and sarsaparilla too, redder nuances, vanillin and liquorice. The palate’s built in layers, really deep-set concentrated powerful fruit with some measure, good balance and depth, stylishly tailored structure, and a polite, measured finish. Not a blockbuster in Grange terms, but this is a very good wine with clear Penfolds DNA. Balanced, not forced, Mr. Gago defintely gets an A for effort here" - James Suckling

Penfolds Grange

First created by Max Schubert in 1951, Grange became the defining expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-region philosophy. Inspired by the age-worthy wines Schubert encountered during a trip to Bordeaux, Grange broke from convention by combining intensely ripe South Australian Shiraz with barrel fermentation and new American oak. Today it is officially recognized as a Heritage Icon of South Australia and remains one of the country’s most important and collected wines. The 2011 Grange is particularly unusual as it is 100% Shiraz, only the sixth Grange produced entirely from the variety at the time of release.

Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep, dense dark red with a concentrated core.

Nose: Powerful and distinctly Grange, with blackberry and blackcurrant joined by black liquorice, sarsaparilla and savoury soy. With air, more complex notes of black olive, truffle, vanilla, coffee and subtle oak begin to emerge.

Palate: Full-bodied and structured, revealing blackberry, cassis, fig, rhubarb and quince over layers of black olive, dark coffee, liquorice and savoury spice. Pronounced, gripping tannins provide impressive depth and weight while maintaining freshness and balance.

Finish: Long, powerful and persistent, with dark fruit, liquorice, espresso, spice and finely integrated oak carried by firm, lingering tannins.
