Abreu Thorevilos

Abreu Vineyards was founded by David Abreu, one of Napa Valley’s most influential vineyard growers. Born into a Napa farming family, Abreu worked vineyards from a young age before establishing his own vineyard-management business and planting Madrona Ranch in 1980. The 2009 vintage itself is especially interesting. Vinous described Abreu's 2009s as unusually silky and seductive compared with the more tannic 2008s, although Thorevilos remained the most powerful and tightly structured wine of the lineup.

Tasting Notes
Colour: Exceptionally deep blue-purple, still reflecting the enormous concentration for which Thorevilos is known.

Nose: Powerful and complex, opening with blueberry, blackberry, dark cherry, and plum, followed by violet and lavender. With air, layers of graphite, cedar, espresso, coffee, new leather, and menthol emerge, giving the wine an increasingly savoury and mineral dimension.

Palate: Monumental and full-bodied, with tremendous concentration yet impressive purity. Dense black and blue fruit is layered with graphite, espresso, dark chocolate, cedar, and spice, supported by serious structure without the hard tannic edges sometimes associated with powerful Napa Cabernet. Parker particularly highlighted the wine's combination of intensity and seamless texture.

Finish: Exceptionally long and powerful, carrying dark fruit, graphite, coffee, cedar, florals, and mineral character. Despite its scale, there is a sense of precision and balance that keeps the wine from feeling simply heavy.
