Quilceda Creek Palengat 2013

Quilceda Creek Palengat 2013

Like the CVR release, the 2013 Palengat Vineyard is slightly darker than its 2012 counterpart and is one serious barrel sample. Incorporating more Merlot from the Wallula Vineyard (which largely came on line in 2012), the blend in 2013 is 58% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. It gives up tons of blackberry and cassis fruit to go with licorice, chocolate and wild herbs aromas and flavors, Full-bodied, voluptuous and concentrated, with terrific purity of fruit, it will be reasonably approachable on release and drink well fro 10-15 years. -

Quilceda Creek Palengat 2013

Founded in 1978 by Alex and Jeannette Golitzin, Quilceda Creek was just the 12th bonded winery established in Washington State after Prohibition. The winery’s roots have an important connection to American wine history: Alex Golitzin’s uncle was legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff, who served as an early mentor and advisor to the family. The 2013 Palengat is unusual within the winery’s portfolio because it is Merlot-dominant, composed of 58% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. Unlike earlier editions, all of the fruit for this vintage came from the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, sourced from the Champoux, Palengat, Lake Wallula and Wallula vineyards.

Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep red-ruby with an opaque, concentrated core.

Nose: Generous aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, cassis and blackberry layered with graphite, liquorice and anise. Floral notes, dark chocolate, cigar leaf and subtle mineral character emerge with air.

Palate: Full-bodied, plush and remarkably smooth, with concentrated blackberry, plum and cassis supported by superfine tannins. Savoury notes of graphite, liquorice, herbs and mineral complement the ripe fruit, while the Cabernet Franc brings additional floral lift and freshness.

Finish: Long and energetic, carrying dark berries, graphite, liquorice, tobacco and mineral notes through a polished, lingering finish.
